Extended Windows Shutdown Times

• Some customers have experienced extended Windows shutdown times and have been unable to perform a safe Removal of USB storage devices when the Macrium Changed Block Tracker (CBT) driver is installed. This has been resolved.

       Note: This patch will require a reboot. The initial reboot will still be using the previous CBT driver, so may take an extended amount of time to shutdown. The new CBT driver will be active after the initial reboot.

Windows XP/Vista/7 Scheduled Tasks Exit Code

• Scheduled backups on Windows XP/Vista/7 could complete with code 0xff. Tasks would complete successfully but error as the application was unloading. This has been resolved.

Latest F.Lux gets grayscale mode

The most recent version of the display manipulation software F.Lux introduces a new grayscale mode that users can enable in the application.

F.Lux is a popular application for desktop and mobile operating systems to adjust the color warmth and other display and color related settings automatically or manually.

One of the ideas behind F.Lux is to reduce blue light in the evening and at night to improve sleep. Users can set it up to adjust the warmth of the screen automatically based on the time of day, or select a manual setting instead that they prefer to use.

The developer introduces a number of new features in version 4 of F.Lux released in 2017; among them options to select presets and to whitelist programs to make sure color is displayed correctly and not manipulated when whitelisted programs are active.

Presets are custom configurations that users may enable directly.

F.Lux 4.84 Grayscale

Grayscale mode is a new mode in F.Lux that displays everything in grayscale. It is an attempt to reduce distractions by colorful screen elements such as icons or the toolbar of the operating system.

The big surprise is how distracting the icons on the top and bottom of your screen are. These icon colors are the kind of thing you see in candy stores and on fire alarms, but we have to ignore them just to get work done. Without those colors, your computer looks more like a magazine that can help you focus on reading or thinking—it feels different, like a sheet of paper.

F.Lux users may toggle grayscale mode with the new keyboard shortcut Windows-End, or with a click on Menu > Effects and extra colors > Grayscale.

F.Lux reduces blue light while in grayscale mode just like it does so for other presets the software comes with.

Closing Words

Grayscale mode was designed to reduce distractions and while it certainly does so to a degree it may also make it more difficult to work with the computer or read text on the screen. The new mode requires some time to get used to it; most users will probably use it only sporadically and not all the time.

Some users reported that the new version washes out colors on their devices. I could not verify this on my end, however.

A sophisticated text editor for code, markup and prose

Sublime Text is a comprehensive text editor that supports plain text and programming languages (including HTML), and it is the portable version of Sublime Text. The user-friendly interface has a modern-looking design that is highly customizable. This means that you can control the font size and color scheme used within the program. In addition to that, you can also hide or reveal certain tabs and tool bars. A search function is available throughout the text and for files. You may switch to full screen mode, customize the layout (e.g. columns, grid), enable syntax highlighting (e.g. Perl, PHP, SQL, XML), use a spell checker, as well as record and save macros, among many other options.
In order to make some of the software utility's options more accessible, a huge number of shortcut keyboards is available, such as "Ctrl+L" to select an entire line, "Ctrl+E" so as to use a specific selection in the search, and open the Command Palette with "Ctrl+Shift+P". Seeing that this is a portable version, it means that installing Portable Sublime Text to the hard drive is not required. You can copy the program to any location on the HDD, or even to a portable device such as a USB flash drive, therefore enabling you to use the app on any computer that you have access to. In addition to that, no new keys are going to be added to the Windows registry, nor to the Start screen.

Sublime Text has a good response time and minimal impact on system performance, using a very low amount of CPU and RAM. No error dialogs were shown in our tests, and the app did not hang or crash. Thanks to its modern interface and myriad of advanced options, Sublime Text should please experienced users who are looking for an all-around text editor.
To sum up, Sublime Text is easy to work with, as long as you happen to be an advanced user. The modern interface, powerful search capabilities and large numbers of options make this software utility a smart acquisition.
