Upload files for scanning with the VirusTotal service, either by using drag and drop or from the context menu, with this open-source utility

VirusTotal has become a very popular service for scanning relatively small files, as it aggregates numerous antivirus engines to help you figure out if a file is dangerous while also enabling you to identify false positives.

Since the official desktop scanner is not being updated regularly, a third-party solution like VirusTotal Uploader may be what you need.

Upload files to VirusTotal from a simple desktop UI

Before anything else, you will need to provide a VirusTotal API key. To get one, simply create a VirusTotal account and access your profile. When you have it, open the application's settings and paste it in the designated field.

To scan a file, you can just drop it inside the main UI. If it has already been uploaded, you have the option of either viewing the last scan log or scanning it again. When the results are available, they will be opened in your default browser.

Scan files directly from the context menu

Alternatively, you can integrate the application into the context menu to speed up your scans. However, you cannot re-upload files that have already been scanned when using this method.

Also, we noticed that VirusTotal Uploader occasionally triggers an error message when attempting to scan files from the context menu. It is unclear why this happens, but it only seems to affect items on certain drives that have spaces in their file path.

How to use

It is really easy! Just drag and drop file into the app and voila!

A program that calculates checksums and hashes of files, compares the contents of files using an algorithm specified by the user, verifying and generating checksum files (.md5, .sha1, .sha256 and others), calculating checksums of the given text.

The program supports 30 hashing algorithms, among others MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, the SHA-3 algorithm family.

To facilitate the use of the program, the interface has been divided into thematic modules displayed on separate tabs.

File

The first module - File - allows you to calculate checksums of any files. The controls displaying the calculated values have been divided into groups and placed on collapsible panels. Each algorithm can be freely activated / deactivated, depending on the needs.
Files and folders can be added by drag and drop.

PS Hash is a portable application. Extract the 32-bit or 64-bit version to archive and run the PsHashW.exe to start using it. The program uses an INI file to store its settings.

The application has a tabbed interface and displays the following tabs: File, Log, Compass, Verify and Text. The File tab is the primary tab. Use the "Select files" button to add the file that you wish to calculate the checksum of.

There are three icons to the right of the i icon. The first of these is the VirusTotal button, which when clicked opens a new tab in your browser to load the scan result page of the selected file. It uses the SHA-2 256 value of the file to search for a match on VirusTotal. The other two icons can be used to perform a search for the file name, using the Google or DuckDuckGo search engines.

There are 30 algorithms available in PS Hash, and they're divided as follows.

CRC and Adler - CRC16, CRC24, CRC32, CRC64, Alder 32

MD/RipeMD - MD2, MD4, MD5, RipeMD, RipeMD-128, RipeMD-160, RipeMD-256, RipeMD-320

SHA-0/SHA-1/SHA-2 - SHA-0, SHA-1, SHA-2 224, SHA-2 256, SHA-2 384, SHA-2 512, SHA-2 512/224, SHA-2 512/256

SHA-3/SHAKE - SHA-3 224, SHA-3 256, SHA-3 384, SHA-3 512, SHAKE-128, SHAKE-256

Each section is collapsible, so you can minimize the ones you don't want to use. You can pick the algorithms that you want to calculate the hashes for. When you have made your selection, click on the "Calculate checked hashes" option at the top of the screen.

PS Hash will start the hashing process, you can view its progress at the bottom of the screen. Once it has finished computing the values, they are displayed in the textbox next to each option. Click on the "Clipboard" button to copy the value.

*The program also allows you to add commands that generate checksum files to the context menu of directories available from the Explorer.

*Displaying a list of running processes and modules (libraries) used by these processes with the possibility of calculating the checksum / hash of each (not protected by the system) displayed file.

*You can check the displayed files on TotalVirus.com, as well as search the names of the displayed files on Goolge and DuckDuckGo.

*The program is portable and does not require installation of any additional libraries, runtime environments, frameworks, etc. Only one INI file located in the directory with the program executable file is used to save the settings. If you do        not use (optional) integration with the system shell, you can safely move program files to another directory, computer and run it from a new location.

*Possibility of program automation thanks to support of options passed on the command line. The full list is available by pressing Ctrl + F9.
