Toms Hash Explorer 1.2

Tom's Hash Explorer is a fast, multi-threaded, cryptographic Windows utility for calculating hash values. You can easily use it to browse and calculate cryptographic hash values for either single files or all files in a folder. Hash values are important in verifying the integrity of files to determine whether or not they have been modified. The verification can come in handy in many situations, especially when you are dealing with downloaded files.

Using Tom's Hash Explorer

Tom's Hash Explorer allowed us to calculate Hash values in a variety of ways. First, we could calculate for a single file, which we initiated by browsing to the desired file and double clicking it. Double clicking opened a single file window where we could use one or more algorithms. A check box on the upper part allowed us to select all algorithms at once.

We then clicked the button on the toolbar to calculate the Hash values. Each selected algorithm had a Hash value displayed to its right. We copied a value by right-clicking on it and clicking on “Copy Selected to Clipboard.” A pop-up box appeared telling us the value had been copied. The message included the name of the algorithm whose value we had copied.

Alternatively, we could calculate Hash values by choosing the folder option. We selected the folder with the files whose values we wanted to check and then chose our desired algorithm by clicking the appropriate button on the upper part of the program window.

Right-clicking on the column headers gave us several options, including the Column Chooser, which allowed us to add other columns like file attributes and date of either creation or last access. We clicked and dragged the column up to where we wanted to place it.

The context menu also gave us the option to specify the types of files whose values we wanted to calculate. That option proved especially handy when we were handling a folder with many files.

The third method of calculating Hash values takes advantage of the drag and drop feature, which we accessed via the Options tab. When we activated the feature, the lower left part of the application window displayed a “download-like” button showing the area where we needed to drop files or folders.

When we dropped a single file, the single file window opened automatically. Dropping a folder listed the files in the folder on the right part of the user interface.

The program allowed us to export the results as Excel, CSV, RTF, PDF or TXT files. Another button gave us the opportunity to copy all values to the Clipboard. The program also gave us a printing option.

Conclusion

Tom's Hash Explorer makes it easy to verify the integrity of files by calculating their respective Hash values. The free Windows utility is compatible with such popular Hash algorithms as SHA1, SHA2 and MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm. It features a multi-threaded computation engine that delivers fast results.
